We are baptized (spiritually) into the body of Christ when we receive
Jesus Christ. Water baptism
is an opportunity for believers to publicly identify with Jesus Christ.
Also, it is an outward profession of an inward change, and it is
a "declaration of dependence" on Jesus Christ as our Lord. Baptism by
immersion symbolically represents the truth of the gospel message ‑ the
death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(Ephesians 2:8‑9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Matthew 28:18‑20; Acts
2:37‑42; 8:34‑38; 10:47‑48; Romans 6:3‑5)
At the moment we become Christians, we are baptized into the body of
Christ and this spiritual baptism is totally sufficient for salvation.
(Mark 1:8; Ephesians 4:4‑6; Romans 6:3‑4; Colossians 2:11‑12;
Luke 3:16; 1 Peter 3:21)
The physical act of water baptism by immersion (after accepting Christ
as your personal Savior) is not needed for salvation, but is an act of
obedience demonstrating one’s new life in Christ.
(Acts 2:38; 8:12,36‑39;10:47; Matthew 28:16‑20)
Jesus was the spotless Lamb of God and was baptized by John to identify
Himself with sinners and to show why He came.
This was the first public event of His ministry. Therefore we
should identify with Him in water baptism as part of our testimony.
(Matthew 3:13-17)
